Shocking Origins of Some Common Words

If you love language as I do, you will find the etymology of the following words fascinating. Bankrupt The Medici family, also known as the House of Medici, were the original mob bosses. They came to power through their success in commerce and banking in fifteenth-century Florence. Outside Lorenzo de Medici’s palace and every other wealthy Florentine, was a long bench where merchants sat and discussed financial business with their clients. These benches, called banco, later referred to the business themselves — what we call today “banks.” When merchants went out of business, they broke their benches to signify that they were banco rotto — literally meaning “broken bench.” Banco rotto evolved into the English word bankrupt. So if you ever see a broken bench outside your banker’s house, better get your money and run. Editor Writers are familiar with the term “kill your darlings” — the process of cutting precious words from your writing. But editors were advocating bloodshed well befor...

A scene for songs

Students love music, and they love doing songs in class. It’s small wonder then that coursebooks are incorporating songs or offering songs on supplementary photocopiable material. However, these are rarely the songs that students want to listen to. Students are far more motivated when the songs they do in class are those which are familiar to them, or at least within a genre which they like. It’s therefore always a good idea to ask students what kind of music they like and what their favourite songs are. You can then use this information to prepare song activities which you know your students are going to enjoy. With that in mind, this time we’re looking at different song activities you can do in your class. Song Bingo This is a really great activity which works really well for getting students to actively listen for detail and specific words. Use the attached template to help you prepare the activity. Before the class, choose an appropriate song and then choose 15-20 words fr...

100 + 1 ways to rise above.. POLYGNOSIS

100 Ways to Rise Above Posted: 24 Apr 2017 10:11 AM PDT The rungs on a ladder present a perfect visual for negativity – each rung looks like a minus sign – stepping up the ladder enables you to rise above. Negativity is an opportunity for higher, greater thinking, exploring a bigger, better, wider, different angle, a new method or way. Negativity helps highlight a need to improve, invent and create – to overcome problems by finding solutions. Problem focus locks the problem in place – solution focus unlocks potential answers. Whenever negativity arises, you can ask yourself "How can I rise above this?" Every failure is a new beginning – a chance to progress, to move forward and upward. Most negativity is a temporary setback, which halts positive progress whether negativity is thought based or action based. Most negativity is temporary. When negativity arises a great processing method is to simply write it down or mind map it; capture the essence of the "probl...

The Socratic method Inquiry used in our B2 level projects

The Socratic Method Inquiry is at the heart of the Socratic seminar,  Socratic dialogue, or Socratic method, as it is most commonly called. This strategy is named after the philosopher Socrates, who used a broad form of questioning with his students. Each question that is answered predetermines the next question. Socrates used it to show his students the error of their thinking.  Since the time Socrates used inquiry to promote thinking, the Socratic method has changed somewhat through the years. Today, this method is used primarily as a process of inductive questioning, through small steps, with knowledge as the goal. In a classroom, a teacher can use a set of questions to provoke students to think about something. The questions push students to examine what they know with the result of them analyzing a topic in depth.  By using the Socratic method, learners can come to value and recognize good questions while also improving upon a thoughtful method of thinking.
